Strongest Chil Woo: Episode 20 (Final)

Ah, another final episode, another drama wrapped.

Let’s be honest: Strongest Chil Woo isn’t a great show. It’s probably not even a good one. But it has been often entertaining and despite its recent darker turns, I was holding out hope that the finale would see a return to lighter, goofier times. In that, I’m pretty satisfied. The resolution we’re given is hopeful without being too cartoony, and as far as last episodes go, it did the job.

But let’s get on with the show…

Hometown of Legends: Episode 4

Ooooookay. In between bouts of watching intense gymnastics and work, I have successfully recreated the panda look. :D

By the way, the subs had an additional warning that wasn’t present for the other episodes, so I would guess this one is extra gory. People under 15 need not read ahead.

(Note from the future: But this one is still more tragedy than horror.)

The maestro takes command

Some more stills are released of Kim Myung-min taking up the conductor’s wand in upcoming MBC drama Beethoven Virus.

Scenes were shot over two days on August 12 and 13 at the Seongnam Arts Center Opera House as Kim Myung-min commanded a “project orchestra” comprising unruly amateur musicians (in the drama, it’s done purposely to take his character down a peg or two). Performed during these scenes are Rossini’s William Tell Overture, the Gabriel’s Oboe Overture, Beethoven’s Choral (Symphony No. 9), and others.

Beethoven Virus premieres September 10.

Boyish again for Marie Claire

Whoa, for a second I thought this was another cross-dressing pretty boy. After all, September’s Marie Claire features Yoon Eun-hye looking an awful lot like Lee Junki, no?

Give the girl credit where it’s due: she sure embraces style experimentation and change in a fashion-forward and often fearless way. She recently spent a week in London, where she shot this particular spread — and was even recognized by Asian tourists.

Yoon reportedly conferred with the stylist to come up with the concept, and also helped find props for the shoot.

Triple-teaming the Triple team

(Yeah, the headline’s a bit of a stretch. But I couldn’t resist.)

Wha–? Lee Seon-kyun is going to be in MBC’s figure-skating trendy drama Triple?

I mean, I guess it kind of makes sense. He’d starred in director Lee Yoon-jung’s earlier series Taereung National Village (part of MBC’s Best Theater anthology). Following that, he’d agreed immediately to appear in Coffee Prince when she was planning that series. Now that she’s planning her next series, why not cast an actor with whom she’s had a good working relationship? This’ll be Lee Yoon-jung’s third drama series, and the third time she teams with Lee Seon-kyun.

Still, Triple seems like an odd choice, at least at first glance. (He should be moving on and doing hard-boiled crime thrillers and spare indie dramas with guys like Jang Dong-gun!) In this drama series, he’s been cast in the role of an ad agency exec who’s described as straightforward and honest with a sensitive side (so, like most of his roles then). The drama stars rookie actress Min Hyo-rin as its young figure-skating lead, but Jung Il-woo has been removed from the casting list (he was to play a speed skater) following his jump to another MBC series, Iljimae.

I’ll probably be watching Triple when it airs in January, but I’m on the fence as to whether it’ll be candy-coated fun, or a train wreck in the making.

Strongest Chil Woo: Episode 19

If I had to rate the recent episodes, I’d say the previous several haven’t been very good — and that’s by Chil Woo standards, so we’re talking pretty low stuff. Not awful, just boring. But today’s picked up considerably, and even managed a shocker — which I guess is to be expected since we end tomorrow.
